Toe box

Before I cut out the old toe boxes, can anyone who has an original bulkhead, which hasn't been repaired, tell me if the strip with the arrow pointed at it is original toe box?


Also should the two bolts which hold the accelerator cross shaft be captivated? Mine appear to be but are turning, and the toe box is covering the heads if indeed they are normal bolts.

Not sure about toe box originality but my cross shaft has nuts n bolts. A real pain when you are on your own! I ended up putting a spanner on the nut inside and gaffer taped it to hold whilst i got the bolt out.

I've just looked in the parts list, and it should be nuts and set screws, so one the new toe box is in that's what I'll be putting back in.

By toe box, you mean footwell?
Shouldn't the original be held in with spot welds, & not rolled up bogies?  :-?

Yes neat spot welds would be preferable, but is the area above the pigeon **** weld the original foot well, with the replacement foot well underneath it.

Should that area be removed and the new foot well be welded on the edge of the corner?

It looks to me like a PO has flame cut the old footwell out and replaced it once, without tidying up the edges from flame cutting it.

The two bolts have probably had their heads covered by the replaced footwell. I've come across it before as the new footwells have no predrilled holes so lazy fitters just put it over the bolts and weld it in, a massive pain in the arse. As for the lip, I'm pretty sure it's old footwell which they have left to give them something to weld too.

So as I suspected, to do it right I should cut back to the vertical and weld the fresh steel to that.

Hi. If you look at the pictures in my other post there is one of the drivers side of my bulkhead with the footwell removed, the footwell should be spot welded on top of the lip that you can see in the picture. It looks like the lip on your bulkhead has been cut back and the new footwell welded in underneath it.

It certinatly looks like mine has been fitted and welded from the inside of the bulkhead.

it looks to me like your original has been hacked out by stevie wonder with a rubber penknife

that bit of metal that remains is supposed to be in the footwell not on top of it

it also looks narrower than it is supposed to be, from memory it should be 3-3.5" wide

the top edge of the footwell covers that but it also needs fiddling under another piece along the tunnel side, they're a lot of faffing about to fit correctly, loads of randomly placed spotwelds along with a couple of short mig/stick welds in awkward to cut places when originally built

horrible job to do properly in my opinion

So I should be going on top where the pink arrows are, underneath the yellow arrows, but do they go inside or outside where the red arrows are?



I can now see why my new wells come in two parts, it would be really difficult to fit if the pillar side was attached.

Looks like you did a nice job getting the old one out.. so the new one should go in OK.

I brought my replacement footwell in two pieces and then put it together to ensure it went together properly. be careful to ensure you can get it in. The best way I found was to push it all through from "inside" the cab and then mess about getting it over an under your arrows...

Needless to say it took longer to do this than to get the old one out and weld the new one in...
