piston rings

I picked up a set of +0.030" pistons for my 3 bearing 2.25 diesel today.
The original pistons had a scraper ring at the bottom which is not fitted to the new ones although there is a groove for it.
Is this ring now left off? I can not locate it on parts lists at my usual supplier and would have put the old rings from the originals on but one is broken from when a hot spot broke up and damaged the engine. I am also in the same situation as Nuggett posted last week with excessive ring gaps ( could only get britpart piston Grrr)
Any comments on this apprecieated.

The bottom groove is for excessivly worn bores to try and prevent oil passage up to the combustion chamber, DO NOT fit a scraper ring in the bottom groove in an engine with rebored or good cylinder walls, if you do it has a possibility of seizeing, I found this out in the 70's on my 3 bearing diesel

Thanks Redwinch. I have put the glaze breaker down the bores and they dont look to bad and only measure a couple of thou big. I may get + 0.040" rings and file em down to reduce the end gaps I am getting 0.022"/0.025".
My thoughts are that the ring gaps are like that to make them safe for todays modern mechanic who opens the box and fits what is in there.

Your right, this is the way performance engine builders do it you can get the gap exactly the size you want.
I am not dyslexic, there's just loads of biscuit crumbs under this keyboard.

I'd try and work out how much an oversize ring is going to close the gap by, 'cos you really don't want to be filing alot off rings. If nothing else, its a ball ache unless you have a proper ring grinder tool and even then it's fairly time consuming.

PS. If you still fancy some filing, i'd get a diamond file. Knock the handle off it and clamp in a vice then you can file both sides of the 'gap' whilst holding the ring against the jaws of the vice rather than the other way around. That should keep it square ( ish)  ;D  (it helps to have two bits of soft alli angle in the vice too, helps to protect the file face and the ring as you run it along)

If my maths are right the circumfrence of a + 0.040" ring compared to a + 0.030" is an extra ).035" and i am looking to close the gap about 0.010" so around 0.025" to file off.
I am willing to try one and file it to suit. I will pick up just one piston set to play around with and get the rest if it works out.
This is not going to be a quick engine rebuild !
Does anyone have thoughts on rear crank seals to stop them leaking? I did mine and it only lasted about a year.

 First time i did mine I did it by the book and it leaked like a sieve before i even got it out of the barn; in the neighbouring barn was a landy servicing/+  firm and I was advised to fit the flywheel housng first then the seal. It worked.
