Flywheel diameter?
« on: 29 December 2012, 05:09:49 pm »
Just got the box off the 86" this afternoon and am looking at doing an order for the various bits I need.

Not sure what flywheel I have as the engine is an early 110 2.25 attached to my series one gearbox with a 9" clutch.

The diameter of the flywheel is 298/299 mm (edge to edge without the ring).  Converts to 11.7".

Can anyone shed any light on this so I can order the right starter ring for this flywheel :-?

cheers :smilewide:

It's also relative to the starter fitted. Do you have an inertia or pre-engaged unit fitted?

Hi Albert,
Thats part of the story!
When I had the engine fitted (while I was away in Iraq for the first time; hence I didn't do it myself and am unsure! :rolleye0012:) it had an inertia one.

WHen that broke about 6 years ago I fitted a pre-engaged one which worked fine (but may have cause damage to the ring?).
Since then the pre-engaged one broke and the replacement too... :smiley-furious:

So it probably should be inertia :2mo5pow:

Does anyone have one off their motor they can measure for me :smilewide:

I'm hoping it is a standard  2 1/4 petrol one so I can order that rather than an early 110 one which is 'no longer available' most places :2mo5pow:

cheers

Hi
Looks like the flywheel you have there is one for the debender boingy/110 engine. Just been out to my garage to measure them for you and.....the boingy/100 flywheel is the diameter you have - the series flywheels I have a a centimeter or so smaller in diameter. Also the ring gears are considerably different. The boingy/110 one is wider than the series one and appear to have slightly different spacings for the teeth (CBA to count them!)...and in addition, of course the boingy/110 engine uses a pre-engaged starter so the ring gear gets worn on the engine side, as aagainst the series which uses the inertia type starter which, therefore, get worn from the clutch/gearbox side.
There are other difference between the two types of flywheel too and they are not interchangeable (bolts, bronze bush etc) If you let me have an email address I can take a photo for you and send it.

Mine has worn on the engine side- think this in turned fooked my new starter :2mo5pow:

Better get it unbolted to I can get the old ring off

I will send my email address now.

Parksy - just emailed you some pics. I don't think the ring gear is that rare!!! Looks like it is ERC5293 - ebay & others have it?

The picture is a 2.5 debender flywheel (off an 17H engine) However, I believe it is identical to the 2.25 version - I have one of those somewhere as well but would need to search it out. What I can tell you though is the flywheel I have fitted to my 2.5 engine came off a 2.25 debender 11H engine - hence I believe they are identical. Also the same ring gear is listed for both the 2.25 and 2.5 debender engines.
cheers
