I really wouldn't have thought the wing was a good earthing point, to be honest.
Aluminium's a very good conductor of electricity, but is probably too thin on bodywork to take the V/ah of a battery being charged by an alternator or dynamo. The structure of such thin plate can't transport the charge quick enough and simply ends up resisting and building heat.
Extend your earth lead and fix it to the chassis or something else of substantial steel.
