Dip Stick
« on: 01 November 2012, 10:17:51 pm »
I'm getting hacked off with crawling lying underneath to check the gearbox oil so have been looking at this.

http://www.rockymountainspares.co.uk/rocky/images/74-zoomed.jpg

Has any one got one of these? How far does the dip stick go down? Does it screw in to the tube?

Is the transfer box filler the same thread as the gear box? Does any one know what thread the plug is?

This looks like it could be made quite easily and for a lot less than RM are asking if the correct threaded elbow was readily available.

I've heard that some military boxes could be filled from the top, where was the filler plug and could a suffix A box be altered to fill from the top?

Isn't that designed to be used with the RM 'Roverdrive unit' which, if I remember also requires you to change the bottom cover on the transfer box, which increases capacity - and would not give an accurate reading.

You are right, some military boxes had the dipstick, as do the Series One gearboxes, accessed via a flap on top of the transmission tunnel - from where they can also be filled. It was a daft idea for Rover to scrap this - down to money I guess!

I didn't know the military boxes has a dip stick, I was aware the oil could go in from the top.

As far as I can tell from the RM website this dip stick is for the standard case.

Hi - RM dipstick is for a standard transfer box.  You can use it with or without the RM overdrive.

I had my Suffix D gear box re-conditioned by R Whitehouse & Son (I believe they do all the series boxes for Ashcrofts) Colin put a military style filler cover in the top of the box for me and made up a dipstick that can be used through the filler hole.  I have a early transmission tunnel, so can be checked and topped up without crawling about underneath  ;D

Can give you the dimensions of the dipstick if you want.

Cheers - Matt

You're thinking of the boingy Roverdrive, there is a finned cover for the series transfer box as an option but that is just to dissipate heat, the boingy equivalent increases the transfer box oil capacity as well.

Matt, the dimensions would be useful, do you know what thread the filler plug is?

Hi - The filler cap on the main gearbox is not threaded, it is held in place by a spring clip.  It is similar to Series One & early 2 boxes.  You need the early transmission tunnel to access it.
The dipstick is angled as it has to go in at an angle to clear the various shafts.  The filler plug on the side of the gearbox has been sealed with silicon and is now redundant.

I was thinking the dip stick would screw into the filler/level plug on the side. Looking at that arrangement the breather plate is removed and replaced with the filler cap and spring, the dipstick would only be used when the filler cap is off to dip the level?

I've not been able to find the cap and spring on my parts list, but LR Series have FRC4060 - GEARBOX OIL FILLER CAP and 6419 - GEARBOX OIL FILLER CAP SPRING can anyone confirm that these are the parts I need?

I can't see them being anything else but would not like to state for certain. My gearbox caps and springs don't seem to be stamped with a part number (unsurprisingly) so I cannot be of any more help I am afraid!

Thanks, the spring retainer is the same part number.
I think it's safe to say the part numbers I have are correct. I might email LR series before I order.
