Streering
« on: 02 February 2013, 05:08:39 pm »
I've replaced my TRE's between the steering box and the relay today, and attempted to centralise the steering. All the tubes are measured to within the tolerances shown in the manual and the relay arms were in the correct position, but I had less lock on left hand down.

The drop arm of the steering box is touching the bulkhead with left hand down, I'm thinking that the arm has been off in the past and not replaced in the right place. Should the steering lock engage when the steering box is centralised?

You may find this is the relay lever position relationships, as there is a master spline on the arm out of the steering box. Take a look at a manual, and it will tell you what angles the arms sit at relative to your steering arms and spring types. If you have a mismatch in arms/heights, these things rear their ugly heads.

So the drop arm can't go back in the wrong place, but should the arm touch the toe box?

Any more adjustments will need to wait until next weekend, at least some of the slop has gone from the steering.

It can't touch if the relay arms are set correctly and the longitudinal arm is the right length, as the steering lockstops prevent it.

The steering lock should centralise the steering. Engage it then set relay arm to 89/boingy degrees as manual tells you, whilst it is in bits put some oil in the relay (remove two screws one to let air out one for oil can) check your toe out and swivels and it should steer well.

How many turns lock to lock should I have?

I get three and a quarter with nothing attached to the drop arm, and the steering lock doesn't engage half way between lock.

I've noticed that I don't appear to have any packing pieces between the toe box and the steering box mounting bracket, the parts list shows three so I'm going to try and gain some clearance there.

What thickness are the packing strips?

Having trawled the internet it seems I should have around 3 3/4 turns lock to lock.
