And the headlight surounds (civvy only) should be be body colour till about 1980/81 and grill colour after that, (silver on a 4 cylinder (5 bearing?), black on a V8 - early V8s were still in the body colour era)

Civilian S3 grilles = silver in the main with a black background to the similarly silver letters.
Military S3 grilles = completely black so they don't dazzle the enemy.

Well I went with the majority, and went for silver (aluminium spray) with black surrounding the lettering.

Sprayed everything silver (inc surroundings) and then dabbed some thinned black paint around the landrover wording, letting it find its own level in the recess.
Wiped any excess paint off the lettering and then left to dry.

Looks as new!!

Shame about the rusty front panel its sitting on....

I painted mine with silver paint (use one designed for plastic) after masking off the Land Rover wording/badge. Once done I masked of the the rest of the grill and sprayed the wording/badge black. Once dry I rubbed down the raised letters with fine wet/dry paper to reveal the silver grey color of the plastic underneath. Not perfect but easier than trying to paint the individual letters or masking them off individually.

I'm sure there were black grilles in existence, I saw a brand new one at an autojumble once, maybe eight or ten years ago, but the geezer wanted stupid money for it, so I walked away.
IIRC, it didn't have the words 'Land Rover' on it either... :-?

That's what I thought too.

Just a bit confused as there seems to be quite a few pictures of Limestone ones with Black Grilles. >tnking<

all the grills should indeed be silver and the land rover bit should be gloss or satin black with silver letters

Picked up a new project vehicle.

Got a few bits to do to tidy, but it's come with a rather sad looking black grille with silver showing through.

The vehicle is a hardtop and finished in Limestone all over.

Would the grille have been silver/grey or black, I've not seen many black ones, but I'd say that's what this one was last painted.
Currently in a fetching grey primer colour, so can go anywhere from here.

Is there a paint code/gloss level?
