Gearbox and Differential lubricant additives
« on: 18 March 2012, 06:39:45 am »
Hello all.  Seeking advice on whether any members use a gearbox additive to reduce noise etc?  Are they a good thing to use and do you have any recomendations?  Or are they crap?  thanks Donk

No expensive additives used here, just frequent good oil changes, unless your hard offroading then very frequent  ;D
The noise of the gearbox is like sweet music (good ones sound like classical whilst knackered ones sound like heavy rock that make your ears bleed!), listen to it and any note change will warn you something is wrong  ;-)
Would not recommend the use of sawdust as an additive, as Ive found in one gearbox !  :WTF    sawdust does not turn heavy rock into classical !!!!!!
The utiliser of available resources

Personally I don't use additives, just synthetic transmission oils.

Decent oil contains all the adatives you need, the designers designed it to work well that way.  Gotta get the right grade for the job to start with though - original factory specs aren't a bad guide for basic spec but as that dates back to the 1930's when the rover 4 speed was born there are improvments to be had from some slightly more modern things, though to be fair even todays basic grade oil will have moved on from 'the same stuff' rover had to play with.

Dengieboy, my gearbox sounds like classic shite. Im waiting for the big bang but it amazingly keeps going.  Its got a brand new mainshaft, gears, components and bearings etc and it sounds like its going to implode. I cant hear the music in this one. Maybe thats how its supposed to be? too bad as Im leaving it as it is until it implodes or explodes ,  Ive had the box out about 5 times in the reconditioning process and spent over $1000 on parts for the bastard. When it goes Im burning the evil piece of......Ive got no words to describe my contempt for it.  Donk

Forget STP & that synthetic nonsense, the best gearbox additive of all time is sold by thsi crowd here.

http://www.fyffes.com

Two bunches does it best.

Sadly it onl;y works for about five minutes, which usually enough to cash the cheque... ;-)

No, I think our man is asking about noise reduction  as much as anyhting, so he's a kindred spirit in my book.  Suggest a gearbox blanket and a Wright off road matting kit.

Actully sinthetic oil can make them run slightly quieter, its not going to make a noisy box silent though.  Useing it purely for acustic resions will probubly disapoint, its more of a slight side affect that you treat as a bonus.

I'm sure my 200Tdi got slightly quieter on 10W40 semi synthetic than it was on whatever it had in it before, but that was probubly just because it needed a service and the new oil had less **** in it.
