200tdi headgasket change tips or advice?
« on: 15 July 2012, 11:21:24 pm »
Tomorrow my new headgasket for my 200di will arrive and now we are wondering
do you put some (graphite) oil or something on the gasket before fitting or is it better to put it on dry?
as the aluminium head has more movement with heat than the cast iron block so the friction could theoretical ruin your gasket if its put on dry

any tips with putting the head back on and driving it for the first miles would be appreciated also, as i don't want to mess my gasket up again :banghead

Gasket on dry and worth getting your head check for flatness and leaks by a machine shop. A light skim to true it up wont hurt. Otherwise, just make sure you use the correct thickness gasket and dont lose the caps off the top of the valves.

It's worth having a quick look at the head bolts Just to check there's no signs of stretch - the bolts are supposed to be good for 5 uses but I found necking on a couple of mine when I changed it. Full set was about £20 delivered.

I did this a while ago and its easier than you think! I used a super gasket, a layered expensive metal one that can   be fitted to warped heads. Mine had nt overheated anyway and its been spot on since. You l have no trouble youl need a torque wrench with degrees on it as its easier and just follow the manual.....

yeah got myself the degree thingy for on the wrench today,

and got and read the better manual than the one i had on google docs.
power washed everything with use of degreaser so hopefully tomorrow my new gasket will arrive.

funny thing is my 200tdi always made this strange knocking sound and always was moist behind the engine on the bulkhead so the no4 cylinder was probably leaking to the outside when i put the engine in the car.
Yet i made it to the czech republic 3 times with everybody amazed at the sound/life of my engine while it was really blowing outside the gasket thus not really at its full strength ::).
also a little leak between no2 and 3 cylinder was noticed on the old gasket.

the noise just got louder at times and then it would go away for months just to come back louder.
and this time i could feel the engine puffing to the outside when i put my hand near the bulkhead.

my new gasket for the 200tdi arrived. strange thing is made of 3 pieces of steel riveted together.
is this normal for a new head-gasket or just something better?
original was a graphite composition with steel rings around the cylinders.

also got brittpart oilseals for the valves in the package, these any good or just better stick with the old ones?

Hi Xander,

I find the multi layer steel ones are much better, and my mate who has a garage which deals with a lot of land rovers says they are all he uses now, so I wouldn't worry too much!!

I bet the caravan of doom is dreading all the extra power once the head's done!! ;D

i didn't noticed for 3.5 years :-\ always just thought it was sweating oil like most landrover engines do.
never thought all that oil and noise was coming from the back cylinder :banghead
